Attendees: Pastor Jeff, Charlie Yund, Jill Kephart, Jim Tamsen, Tom Burkman, Elaine Johnson, Sue Kaiser, John Harbison, Fred Claus, Gail Conschafter, Nate Lange, Nikki Fadel, Tracey Swartzmeyer, Mark VonWald, Ginny Thies, Anne Hipp, Judy Maurer, Jon Jones, Laura Mason, Chris Hipp, Bob Kaiser, Ginger Mason, Sheila Rader, Bobbie Cap, Sue Kaiser, Jan Garrison.
Excused: Colleen Marx.
Devotions: Elaine Johnson stated how impressed she is with the leadership and hard work of the group. Wisdom is something we all want for our church. We want the wisdom to make good decisions for TUMC. The danger is that we THINK we know where we want to go, and won’t follow where God wants us to go. She read a passage from a devotional book. Wisdom is not the same as intelligence.
Prayer Request: House fire on Sheree Drive as Fred came to meeting. Pray for those homeowners – as it appears they may be displaced for a while.
Changes to Agenda: John Harbison would like to have a minute to share upcoming events.
Nate Lange would like a minute to share also.
Sue Kaisesr would like to be added to share a brief piece of information.
New Business: Charlie explained the blog and its purpose. Nate explained how to navigate to get to the blog. Trinitychurchcouncil.blogspot.com is the URL to type in address bar. It is also on the church website. Once the blog is up, if you sign up and log in, you can comment on each blog. This is another way for us to be more efficient and “green.” Charlie invited more to read the blog!
Trustees: The Trustees ask everyone to help neaten the church by retrieving out of place items discarding unneeded items, reorganizing cluttered areas and hiding seldom-used materials
Please let us know about and help with reorganization and storage problems
Projects Completed:
Outsourcing lawn and cemetery mowing found not to be cost effective
Programmable LED type front outdoor sign put on hold because of cost
Planned or In Work:
Assemble and install 8’ x 10’ metal shed
Replace all old zone valves at HT ($2600, shared 50/50 with HT)
Add windows in 2 more classroom doors and 2 elevator doors in main church building
Exploring installation of a 4’x 8’ TRINITY sign on our property near I-190
Assigning room numbers for rooms in both church buildings
Investigating severe shortage of storage space
Updated video inventory of church buildings about 50% complete
Historic Trinity Committee is now under Trustees.
Nate: An outreach event is planned for Friday, April 15. Please mark on calendar. Dinner with entertainment will be the event. The idea is to invite friends to come for dinner and theatre. Looking for volunteers to help with the entire event. Geared primarily for adults but all are invited. Most leadership will be those from the Contemporary service. Spread the word and bring friends. Tom motioned to endorse this as a program of the church, and Fred seconded the motion. Motion carried. This is the week before Fish Fry, and the day before the choir performance.
Prayer Ministry: Sue Kaiser reported that prayer activity upcoming in the months ahead: World Day of Prayer – first Friday in March. She does not think it is our turn to host, but will check into it. There are about 6 or 7 different churches participating from the Island. There was a time in TUMC’s history where there was an ecumenical effort to healing services in our family room. The vision is to starts this up again – as a vision of growth. One goal is to have one service a day in one of the Island churches. Another goal is to have something in the summertime in the Town Commons. Models have been successful in other local areas. This takes a lot of planning, but the group feels it is important and will pursue. Charlie asked that we be kept informed.
Missions: John Harbison reported 3 events: Feb 5 – Catch the Spirit. 14 speakers given 15 minutes each talking on all kinds of missions – local, world. Please sign up and support this event. Feb 11 – Missions is pushing to raise money to purchase equipment for Haiti. Tango Event is at Buffalo Launch Club for $35/person to help support his endeavor. Please mark your calendar. John has tickets for anyone interested and flyers for more information. Third event is Feb 26 & 27 focused on Mission. National Methodist from NYC will speak (John Nessel) in AM and in afternoon there will be additional speakers for an hour each to share their experience. John and Andy Harbison will speak, Jeff Terberski from Fairport Church (Congo), and Ken Krieger (Sara Leone) will also speak! This should be a wonderful weekend event. Please plan on signing up to attend. See Elaine Johnson to sign up! Child care is provided if notified ahead of time.
SPRC: Tom Burkman reported there was a Staff Recognition night to thank all staff. This was held at the Yund’s. It was a great time and everyone had a grand time. There were about 45 who attended! This was SPRC’s way of thanking the staff for all they do!!!!!! It was well attended and most appreciated.
Pastor Jeff: Copies of a new translation of The New Testament are available. Please take one and read through it. Leaders are encouraged to read through and then pass it on to someone else to read!
Adult Education – tomorrow will meet with the Episcopalians and discover the similarities and differences. This is tomorrow night 6:30 – 8:00 at TUMC in the Lounge. Updates will appear in Tiny Tidings.
Wonderful Wednesday’s” When Christians Get It Wrong” by Adam Hamilton will be the topic of discussion. Soup will be the dinner for the evening. All are encouraged to attend.
Tracey Swartzmeyer: Financial Peace University is starting up again. Christian based and Bible oriented. New this year, is there is not a preview class, but the first class will be free, and WILL be the preview class. Bring your friends and preview this wonderful class. Class begins Feb 13 at 1:00 PM.
Charlie: Discussion on church priorities and getting our “affairs” in order. Feb 13 is our next visioning meeting. Attendance is down, and must be addressed. One of the issues regarding budget – would be easy to raise more money if we had more people. “How do we make disciples?” is one of the main questions we are looking at. Young families, young children, and youth are some of the groups we would like to have represented more visibly. Those are the priorities. Grow church worship, grow families. Core values this church stands for are Christian Education, Godly leadership, nurture families through active fellowship and community, enthusiastic through worship and praise, and go out and Share the Word! What’s the mission of this church? Some felt current statement is sufficient, others felt it needed to be shortened. There was one that was very visual. “Follow Jesus, make disciples, transform the world.” Then we need to start to look at what the vision of this church will be. These are the steps we will look at and hopefully follow. Comments: John Harbison considers the “older” congregation as a plus. They are experienced, have time to be at church, and support the budget.
Charlie closed the meeting. Minutes waiting approval will be tabled until next month.
Next meeting: February 21, 2011.
Meeting adjourned at 9:07 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Gail Conschafter

Church Charge Conference December 2010
Minutes of the Charge/Church Conference
Wednesday, December 1, 2010
DS Natalie Hansen welcomed the group and asked Pastor Jeff to open in prayer at 7:04.
Natalie introduced the call to mission for the Upper Annual Conference.
The mission statement of the Upper New York Annual Conference:
To live the gospel of Jesus Christ and to be God’s love with our neighbors in all places.
• Natalie asked for participation for the breakdown of the mission statement. If we are to live the gospel of Jesus Christ, we need to read the Bible and share our experience with others.
• Be loving in your actions
• “Get out there.”
• Be aware of the needy around you.
• Be reconciling and forgiving
• Be joyful and rejoice
Be God’s Love
• Be sensitive
• Open Doors and walk along side
• Be God’s Love 24/7
• The call for everyone of us
• With our neighbors
• Doing things together
• Equality
• Recognizing God’s action in our neighbors
• Our neighbors have something to give also
• Dealing with some that are not like us – may be uncomfortable with that.
• Natalie shared a story of Francis of Assisi
In all places
• Everywhere we are
• Any time of the day or night
• Work place, missionaries
• Across the world
• IN prison
• In hospitals, nursing homes, our own homes
• We would intentionally go to places we would not normally go – even if it across the street. (showing up over and over again!)
• Our emails, facebook pages, and all electronic devices we use.
• May not be a physical location, but may be a state of mind or soul.
Pastor Jeff introduced Richard Crawford as the assistant Supervisor to share what the needs of the Grand Island Community are so we might be able to help meet that/those needs.
Dick shared that “Grand Island is a community that cares.” One item is the Lions Club is putting together a needs assessment study to assess the actual needs of our community. The principal at Kaegebein would like to keep the school open all year to help the kids that might need (academic) help all year round. Talk about implementing a program to reach to our neighbors that are no longer able to keep up their home. HIPPA laws prohibit the publicity of these people; however, we may personally know some people that fall into the category. Adopting a playground or roundabout, might be a possibility. Another idea is to form a group that can do something positive in the community such as clean up an area. He shared some things that the Lions Club is doing currently behind the scenes, because we are a humble community and we love to serve our neighbors. National Night out doesn’t get the publicity it needs. The Lions Club may come back to us and identify urgent needs of the community with ideas as to how TUMC can serve these needs. Question: Is there any concrete evidence of poverty on GI. Dick reported that there are three areas: Marigold Housing, Duplexes and North side of Broadway between East Park and Stony Point and Love Road. There are a lot of Social Services that have gone on to help our citizens. The Neighbor’s Foundation helps those in need and helped 75 people for Thanksgiving. A suggestion was made that a public article be written stating just how many people on Grand Island are at the poverty level. There was discussion on some of the town property that has not been taken care of. A round of applause was given to Dick for coming this evening. Natalie asked if we heard anything that might give us an idea about connecting with our neighbors. John Harbison inquired about an after school program for homework help. Dick commented that there is a population out there that could benefit from a program such as this. Transportation might be the issue depending on the location of the program. The hockey rink is going to happen, and fundraising is in progress. Investors are in place, and the business plan is a sound one. The rink will be on Whitehaven and Alvin Rd. There will be 1 ½ pads for ice and an indoor soccer arena for phase one. Veteran’s Park is the busiest place on the Island. All funding is private money. Gene Kozak has researched this concept for years finding the need for ice is there to warrant this project. Opportunities to minister can be utilizing the gym, along with kids that need more help. Building assets in young people is not only about tutoring but building relationships. It may not just be academic, but also in sports and the arts. Connect with those that need something we can offer and building positive relationships. School nurses and police officers are a wealth of information regarding those that are in need. “Grand Island is a place where you have to drive everywhere.” There may be a way to connect by offering transportation to those that need to get somewhere. On April 3 the entire District, is Don’t Go to Church, Be the Church Day. Every church should speak with Town agencies to do something that needs to be done in the community just for the sheer love of it. We are hoping to get 5000 to 6000 UM’s trying to make a difference. What can TUMC do working together to make a difference, and then get together with others to share your experience of that day!
Natalie thanked Dick for coming and sharing.

Notes from January's Visioning Metting
Trinity’s Visioning Continues
On January 8th a group of members met for the third meeting to establish a vision for Trinity. The first meeting in September 2010 discussed the needs and concerns the church faces. We recognized that the major priorities were to grow the worship attendance, make disciples and develop leaders and to nurture young families, youth and children.
In November the group worked to establish Trinity’s core values. We also asked the congregation to share their core values in the form of a top 5 values from a provided list.
At the January 8th meeting there was continued discussion of the core value surveys. The results indicated that Trinity church and its member’s value:
- Supporting Christian education and Godly leadership
- Nurturing people and families through active fellowship and community
- Enthusiastic worship and praise with bible centered preaching and teaching
- Being involved with a well organized laity in community and mission action
- And we desire to grow by making disciples here.
We then started to review our current mission statement to see if it could be improved. We looked at a number of alternative mission statements and none jumped out as a favorite. This will be the starting point for our next meeting on February 12 from 9:00am to noon. Please come and join the fun and pain of developing the mission statement and then beginning to dream about our vision of how we see God working through Trinity to grow Christians.
We will continue on a monthly basis to forge the future vision for our church and develop the strategy and actions we need to take to remain vital and healthy
