April SPRC report

SPRC report for Church Council Meeting April 19, 2010

1.) The program staff review of youth coordinator, Ginny Wilkinson was conducted on April 6. The review focused on are we achieving the goals for the youth program, is the program going in the direction that we would like it to go and what support can we give Ginny in the youth ministry.

Ginny is accomplishing the goals she set for the year but the group asked her to define her longer term goals and dreams for a successful youth program. Her future focus is shared below in the details of the review and she will revise her goals to reflect changes.

Additional dialogue of the interview is below (under comments) for those interested in the details.

2.) We reviewed the benefits for medical insurance coverage to the part time program staff individuals. A $150 per month per staffer allowance would be paid to individuals who provided proof of paid outside insurance. The Von Wald’s would be paid starting 4-15 and Ginny if she requests it. Ginny would come under her husbands insurance in September. This allowance is in effect until 12-31-2010 and will be reviewed for 2011.

3.) Pastor Jeff reported that good financial performance has continued and Trinity may want to consider applying positive revenue to providing support for:

-the Contemporary service leader
-2011 health care for staff
-Providing some recognition awards to part time staff as discussed at a previous meeting.

4.) The next meeting will be Tuesday May 4 at 6:30 with a review of the Christian education directors

Respectfully submitted,

  1. Details of the Youth coordinator interview:

We reviewed Ginny’s appraisal, goals, activities, significant events and training needs for 2009-10. Some of the items for discussed:
-There is a concern that the program needs to grow. Jim Ellson stressed that youth participation is cyclical and we are at a low point, however, we have a significant number 8th graders to build on.
-Paul Sipson’s role has tapered back as planned but we need clarification from Ginny on how she feels she needs assistance from Paul. Ginny was asked to elaborate on how she feels Paul Sipson has helped. Ginny stated that he is someone who has helped her understand the dynamics of the church and someone to discuss ideas and use as a sounding board. Ginny recognizes that this year has been a matter of “getting her feet wet”; she looks forward to expanding programs.
-Ginny needs to be more pragmatic about goals establish spiritual goals first and see how the other goals follow. We have encouraged her to become more specific about goals.
Concern, the church itself needs a well defined set of goals.
-Suggestion was given that training could enhance Ginny’s leadership and class room skills.
Jeff feels that she can build on what she has learned from this year and that she wants to grow from that point forward.
-Ginny shared that her thoughts about how the year has gone. She discussed that one of her main focus’ as of late is concentrating on the 8th graders, building their own community amongst themselves. Build with the work camp group which is about half 8th graders. A concern that Ginny has is we really haven’t had youth coming to the contemporary worship then transitioning into the Sunday school hour.
-Consistency of volunteers is also crucial; Ginny would like more volunteers to be involved. Ginny explained “Orange” training; a model of a church, updating the ways that the church functions family training giving families the skills to work with their children. The world is changing and the church needs update that way the truths of church are presented to the congregation.

    Dreams for youth:
-Ginny would love to have a bible study that meets on a regular basis. A group that has the passion to learn more about their faith.
Ginny realizes that the passion comes from the youth being excited about inviting their friends to come to Trinity. She hopes that we can fully utilize the facilities that we have at Trinity.
-Another goal would be to go on youth retreats next year.
-Ginny reviewed what happens on Sunday morning. 10:10 to 10:30 is free time to enjoy the gym, games. Middle School has been going through a curriculum called Grapple. High School has been discussing different topics. Ginny will be introducing the movie “To save a life” on Saturday night’s lock in. The movie addresses topics pertinent to high school students dealing with the pressures of high school and college.

Jeff asked Ginny’s opinion about Youth worship, more specifically developing something for the youth themselves. So far we have had Holy week worship, work camp worship. Jeff asked her to discuss how she feels that the SPRC can help her achieve her goals.
-Volunteers is big one, she would like to have people who are really interested in building a relationship with the youth.
-Instead of people coming to Ginny and asking her if the youth would like to provide a service it would be nice if people would come and address the youth personally, to develop a relationship. The congregation needs to get to know the youth better. Write ups for Trinity Tidings would be helpful.

Charlie asked Ginny to revise her goals and dreams so that we can work towards a plan to achieve those goals:
-A consistent , effective bible study program for Wednesday evenings
-A program that is exciting and draws new youth To know who Jesus is and allows us to fully utilize our facilities
-To develop and implement other retreats.

If there is specific training that would enhance the program we can make it happen.
